    Bio

Socrates Mitsios, born and raised in New York. Studied at New York University, NYC, and completed a degree in psychology, then worked in Bellevue Hospital/NYU Medical Center, conducting psychopharmacology research on the acutely psychotic...and then...well... then, traveled for a year, freaked out, grew some hair, long hair, had a very significant over-nite train ride from Amsterdam to Munich, looked out the window to a full moon, slept with one eye open, flirted some more with Europe, moved back to the US .o.f. A, lived in a roadside motel in 'up-state' New York, countryville, paid 7 dollars daily, hung out with "old" people, took long walks, took some pics of nature, broke into houses, took some more pics, moved to Athens to live the dream, moved out of Athens to live the dream, re-landed in London, and has since been living there for the past 4 years developing his signature photographic and video style. Believes in digital but thinks film, and says the people I shoot are like me.

His most current project is SoftRock, a series of 5 to 8 minute short films, that premiered in October of 2011, at the George Pompidou Centre, as part of ASVOFF. The SoftRock series, is an exercise in the photogenics of sex, exploring the power within the act both social and aesthetic. The films have all the predictable pleasures of porn and pop and fashion: processed, repetitive, manufactured visual thrills intended for rapid and casual consumption. The film pieces are a progression, a smooth yet dangerous stumble, into a world of timid abandon, trance, romantic love and S/M. Like all good stories, the ritual of relationships is presented. But these relationships grow through increasingly ominous and chaotic sexual encounters. Pain is a constant threat, but it will always be offered to the viewer as decorative and fashionable entertainment, shamelessly pleasing to the eye.
